W. Chris Lochner for Allegheny County

Jobs & The Economy

Allegheny County's population has experienced an estimated decline of over 25,000 residents, or about 2%, from 2020 to 2023 alone.

The job market paints a concerning picture as well. From 2018 to 2023, Allegheny County lost over 44,000 jobs, the most of any county in Pennsylvania. Manufacturing jobs were down 1.5% from May 2024 to May 2025. While a significant portion of these were in sectors serving the local population, nearly 20% were from "traded" sectors, which are crucial for economic growth and attracting outside investment. Many rural and western Pennsylvania Local Workforce Development Areas still have fewer jobs now than before the pandemic, with declining labor forces contributing to this trend.

Compounding this challenge, our local academic, technical, and trade institutions, vital for equipping our workforce, simply don’t have the resources they need to help our families acquire the in-demand skills necessary to secure these essential, family-sustaining jobs and overcome the economic challenges ahead.

The recently enacted 36% real estate property tax increase in Allegheny County is more than just a burden; it's an economic sledgehammer poised to further decimate jobs and inflict severe pain on our working families. This is happening at a time when Allegheny County and the broader Western Pennsylvania region desperately need to create good, well-paying, family-sustaining jobs.

What’s worse? The current county administration has NO REAL PLAN to correct the economic plague unleashed with this crippling tax hike! They are failing to address the fundamental need for a thriving job market that supports our communities, especially when facing persistent population and job losses.

Chris will work to right this ship by forcing our county government to create a real plan of action that directly addresses these critical issues:

  • Creates and retains good, well-paying, family-sustaining jobs for our working families, directly combating the ongoing job and population loss in Allegheny County and the wider Western Pennsylvania region.

  • Ensures access to quality work training programs that deliver the in-demand skills they need, empowering our workforce to fill the jobs of tomorrow and secure their financial futures.

  • Reforms our county government to ensure that it is working to assist job creators rather than putting them out of business with prohibitive taxes and regulations, fostering an environment where family-sustaining employment can flourish.

Chris will lead the fight to hold our county’s politicians to account and ensure that they focus taxpayer resources on our working families’ needs, prioritizing the creation of a vibrant economy with ample economic and employment opportunities for all.
